On the death of OBL:

[Despite the possible overtones, this remains a fine definition of what all men (and women) should strive for in their lives. The enlightenment, in short, seems to have had a much more truly noble, because truly humanist and publicly agreeable, notion of what it meant to be a person. As my wife says, “this puts the virtue back into vir.”
